What is Plantar Fasciitis?

A lot of people that suffer from heel pain have plantar fasciitis. This is a condition that causes discomfort that can gradually become worse. It happens because there is inflammation of the plantar fascia. This is an important ligament that is present in the foot, running along the bottom and connecting the heel bone with the plantar fascia.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

There are some activities that are going to make you a higher risk of developing plantar fasciitis. For example, if you do a lot of exercise and running, this can mean that you are more prone to the condition. Unfortunately, the plantar fascia is not very flexible. This means that it can be at risk of damage if it is subjected to pressure and stress. When small injuries happen, this is going to result in discomfort. In addition, other risk groups for plantar fasciitis include:

  • Those that are overweight
  • Those that stand for long periods of time
  • Those that do not wear supportive footwear
  • Those with a high arch

What are the Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?

Often, when you have plantar fasciitis, you are going to be aware that something is wrong. A lot of people will experience pain on their heel and this can radiate up the arch of the foot. Inparticular, the discomfort will be most noticeable when you wake up in the morning or when you stand up after sitting down for a while. Walking can help to reduce the discomfort, which can feel like a shooting or stabbing pain.

What is the Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis?

A chiropodist is going to be very helpful if you have plantar fasciitis. They are going to be able to diagnose the problem and set up a treatment plan for you. For example, they can help you choose suitable stretches and exercises to help the plantar fascia. You may require new shoes that give you the support you need. In addition, orthotics can be beneficial and help with this support.

Plantar fasciitis can be painful. In these cases, a chiropodist can recommend using ice. This is a good way to relieve pain and to reduce swelling. Anti-inflammatory medication can be bought over the counter too. A chiropodist may decide that the best treatment is steroid injections. This can help if your symptoms are severe.
